Andy Thurman's racing career began in 1988, racing NASCAR Late Model Stock cars at Concord Motor Speedway. In two years, he moved up to the ultra-quick Late Model Sportsman cars at the speedway, and raced in that division for the next three years. Some highlights of Andy's racing achievements at Concord Motor Speedway are: Five "Big Ten Victories" and Eight Pole Positions.
In July 1993,Andy made his debut in the NASCAR Sportsman division at Pocono Raceway posting a top 15 finish. He also competed in the division's last race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway (October 1993). His extensive experience driving the Late Model cars at Concord Motor Speedway, and his experience in the Winston Cup and Busch Grand National style cars used in the driving school, proved extremely beneficial to his success in the Sportsman division.
In 1994, Andy posted three top ten finishes and
three additional top fifteen finishes in the competitive NASCAR Sportsman division.
In addition, he competed on a limited basis in 1994 at Concord Motor Speedway and compiled
three top five finishes in the lightning-fast Late Model Division.
1995 saw Andy compete in the tough NASCAR Sportsman Division, compiling his most impressive record to date in that division. He was a model of consistency with three Top Ten and three Top Five finishes during the seven race season. In addition to running the full Sportsman schedule and teaching driving schools full-time, Andy also found time to compete at Concord Motor Speedway where he had a Top Ten finish in a 200-lap Big Ten race in the Late Model division.
During 1996, Andy made his debut in the ARCA division at Daytona International Speedway finishing in the top fifteen. He continued in this division gaining experience at tracks such as Talladega International Speedway, Louisville Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In 1997, Andy competed in the July ARCA race at Pocono Raceway where he finished 13th. He then began working toward plans for 1998.
In 1998, Andy competed in 16 of 20 races on the competitive USAR Hooters ProCup Series. The #47 team posted 6 top ten and 2 top five finishes during the year where they ended up 18th in the overall point standings.
Currently, Andy is a Driving Instructor for the Richard Petty Driving Experience where he has been instructing since January, 1997. The Richard Petty Driving Experience is the fastest growing driving school in the country and has become well known for having some of the most exciting driving school and race car ride programs being offered in the stock car market. The staff and equipment are professional and first class. Andy's responsibilities include serving as driving instructor for courses at Charlotte, Atlanta, and Texas Motor Speedways, Nazareth International Raceway, Walt Disney World Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Additionally, Andy is serving as rear tire changer on the race-day pit crew for Bill Elliott Racing and the McDonalds #94 Ford Taurus on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit. Previously, he spent 2 years as the rear tire changer for Filmar Racing and driver Kenny Wallace and 1 year with Jasper Engines and driver Robert Pressley #77 on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit.
